Harp & Gurdy Festival

The Cornwall Harp & Gurdy Festival returns to Falmouth for the weekend with a programme filled with live performances and events to explore and celebrate these two distinctive instruments.

Bringing together local and national acts, alongside taster sessions and the opportunity to hear their influence on all types of music, this Festival for all ages will mean you will never view harps and hurdy-gurdies the same way again!

You can experience and take part in beginner harp workshops, a hurdy-gurdy ceilidh, Stone Club DJ set, acclaimed harp player Anna McLuckie and more.

Supported by Arts Council England and Falmouth Town Council

Saturday 30 November

Beginner Harp Taster 15:30-17:00

Come and try your hand on the harp. A taster session for those who have never played the harp and would love to have a try! A 30 minute 1:2 teacher to student ratio workshop run by local harpist Alice Wonder. We will be using folk/half size harps for this workshop.

The WAD 19:30-20:00

A Falmouth-based Morris dancing side named after Joan the WAD, Queen of the Cornish Piskies. Taking inspiration from Cornish folklore and Joan's feisty and fiery nature, this all-female Morris side brings the WAD energy and a modern, progressive take to a mixture of traditional border and Cotswold dances.

Anna McLuckie 20:00-21:30

Scottish singer, songwriter and Clàrsach player. Raised on classical and traditional music, Anna’s writing draws on her musical beginnings and also takes influence from her love of popular music and more experimental sounds. Her music sits in a world of contemporary folklore; her songs layered with interweaving harmonies, story-led lyricism and free form structures.

Stone Club DJs 21:30-00:00

Founded by Lally MacBeth & Matthew Shaw, join Stone Club for a journey into the realm of the mythic. Featuring sounds from around the world, they will take you on a voyage taking in everything from Breton Hurdy Gurdys to Welsh Harps, and more than a few Gregorian chants.

Sunday 1 December

Harp Journey with Alice Wonder 15:00-16:00

A wonderful, wandering into the imagination with harp music. Learn about the magical, healing histories of celtic harp music and experience a calming soundscape journey. A semi-interactive workshop that will leave you feeling inspired and unwound. During parts of this workshop you will be invited to sit on the ground, lie or move around. This is not essential to the experience and is still accessible to those who are unable to do this. Bring comfortable clothes and a blanket or mat (i.e yoga mat) if you have one.

Gurdy Jam Workshop 15:00-17:00

An opportunity for electronica buffs and instrumentalists of all kinds to work with hurdy gurdy player Ian Waughman. This will be a collaborative and creative workshop with a focus on giving participants the opportunity to do something new with their instrument, equipment and/or writing. Starting from some of Ian’s lyrics, a fusion of Cumbia beats and chords, a pinch of Dub sounds and some Hurdy Gurdy we can have a fun and creative couple of hours. Anything is possible! All levels welcome. All instruments welcome. All forms of participation welcome.

Gurdy Jam Curtain Raiser 19:30-20:00

A chance to hear the amazing sounds created by the afternoon's workshop participants. We have no idea what they'll come up with but 'Psychedelic Cumbria meets Dub and Drone' sounds unmissable!

Gurdy Ceilidh 20:00-22:00

A one-off ceilidh with dances from across the UK and beyond. Dance along to traditional tunes re-interpreted by a band that includes harp and hurdy-gurdy. No experience needed, we guarantee a lively session.
