Gorwel

Gorwel (horizon in Cornish) is a collaborative evening curated by Lowender Festival (a CIO celebrating Cornwall’s heritage and Celtic links), Endelienta (arts events curators in North Cornwall) and The Cornish Bank.

Gorwel will showcase up and coming artists exploring contemporary perspectives on Cornish music and dance - existing as a special event among the wider Lowender festival program.

Expect haunting songs, electronic beats and groove to the maximum all with a distinctive Cornish twist from artists such as Martha Woods, Bagas Fellyon, and the newly formed An Myster.

Martha Woods: Electro-folk songs and tunes evoking the spirit of Cornwall. Having grown up immersed in Cornish music and dance, and studied on Newcastle University's Folk and Traditional Music Degree, the composer and multi-instrumentalist brings a fresh sound to Cornish folk music while never straying too far from the tradition. Her music combines folk-influenced fiddle melodies and lyrics inspired by Cornwall's folklore, history and landscape, with up-tempo electronic beats.

Bagas Fellyon: “Band of Fools” in the Cornish language, is a dynamic group from Cornwall who have quickly made a name for themselves as one of the foremost champions of Nos Lowen music, a community-centred tradition unique to Cornwall, where the emphasis is on joyous music and participatory dance. The band has the ability to turn any gathering into a night of celebration and participation.

An Myster: Gwariroryon an werin Kernewek. Viewing Cornishness from a contemporary perspective, weaving traditions from past and present into a performance peace with community and connection to place at its heart. Expect old songs, new beats, expressive and social dance as we explore the boundaries of tradition and contemporary.

Hosted at KCM Church.
